Cambridge 19 - Test 4

Question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Answer

In the modern world, supermarkets commonly sell food imported from many countries, raising debates about whether this trend is beneficial or detrimental. I firmly believe that it is a positive development as it enhances consumer diversity and fosters cultural exchange.

On the one hand, some argue that prioritizing domestic food supports local farmers and producers economically. Purchasing homegrown products ensures that income circulates within the country, which can strengthen the agricultural sector and promote national self-sufficiency. For instance, the United States provides subsidies and incentives to encourage citizens to buy local produce, thereby sustaining its farming industry. Nevertheless, restricting consumption solely to local products may limit consumer choice and reduce people’s exposure to new food experiences. Over time, this lack of variety could make daily diets monotonous.

On the other hand, the availability of imported food significantly enriches consumer options. Access to a wider selection not only satisfies diverse dietary preferences but also introduces individuals to new cultural values through cuisine. For example, immigrants living abroad often rely on traditional foods from their home countries, as these products offer both comfort and familiarity. Furthermore, the presence of international goods in supermarkets encourages people to explore foreign cuisines, thereby fostering cross-cultural understanding. Importantly, this does not diminish the importance of supporting local producers but rather ensures that consumer choices are not restricted.

In conclusion, while buying local food can contribute to the national economy, I believe that the advantages of global food availability outweigh the drawbacks. The freedom of choice and the cultural diversity it brings are crucial in today’s interconnected world.
