Cambridge 19 - Test 3

Question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Answer

Some argue that young people should be exempt from the responsibility of saving money, while others contend that financial preparation is essential for everyone regardless of age. I strongly agree with the latter view, as financial responsibility is indispensable in today’s world.

On the one hand, supporters of the idea that youngsters need not save often point to their lifestyle and immediate needs. Young individuals are naturally inclined to spend on hobbies, self-expression, or social activities. For instance, a teenager may purchase accessories to personalize their workspace or invest in collectible items such as keyboards. Such expenditures can foster creativity and provide meaningful personal satisfaction. Nevertheless, unrestricted spending risks fostering poor financial habits. Without learning how to allocate resources responsibly, young people may develop a lack of respect for money, especially given that most of them have not yet established a stable income.

On the other hand, cultivating the habit of saving instills a sense of financial security and foresight. Savings not only help individuals manage unexpected crises but also prepare them for long-term responsibilities such as education, healthcare, or housing. For example, older generations often emphasize saving as a family value because it shields them from economic uncertainty and provides a safety net for their children. This does not imply that one should deny themselves all enjoyment, but rather that balanced financial vigilance ensures both present satisfaction and future stability.

In conclusion, while moderate spending on hobbies and personal development is beneficial, I believe that saving should remain a universal practice. Financial responsibility is an essential life skill, equipping people of all ages to navigate an increasingly uncertain economic environment.
